Meridia / Reductil (Generic Sibutramine)

Meridia is the same drug as Reductil. It is called Reductil in the European market and Meridia throughout the rest of the world. It has the generic name Sibutramine and is a prescription drug for the treatment of obesity. It is a stimulant that acts on the central nervous system and is chemically related to amphetamine. Some people can become addicted to it.
How does Reductil work?
Reductil works by increasing the levels of the hormones serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain. These hormones are thought to influence appetite, and increasing the levels of serotonin in particular leads to a feeling of fullness.
When was it approved?
Reductil was approved by the FDA in November 1997 for the treatment of obese patients.
What are the side effects?
Side effects can include:
- A dry mouth
- Digestive disturbances (eg nausea, constipation)
- Headache
- Flu-like symptoms
- Painful periods
- Weakness
- Joint pain

You should see a doctor before getting a prescription. In particular, this drug is not suitable if you:
- Have an eating disorder, eg anorexia nervosa
- Have high blood pressure, have had a stroke or have hardening of the arteries
- Have kidney or liver problems
- Are taking certain other drugs, eg fluoxetine, phenelzine and related drugs or other appetite suppressants.
